Learning Outcomes  

This major is for students wanting to teach choral or instrumental music in elementary or secondary schools.

Students must enroll in seven semesters of performance study.

Music Education (14 credits)


All Music Education courses must be completed with a grade of ‘C’ or better to fulfill requirement.

Professional Education (12 credits):


Event Attendance


A large number of concerts and recitals representing a broad spectrum of musical styles and genres occurs every semester. This resource of musical events is an integral part of a musician’s training. All music majors and minors must attend a specified number of concerts, recitals, and Contemporary Music Festival events before graduation. Information concerning this requirement is available in the school office.

Choral/General Education Concentration (18-21 credits)


Music Education (10 credits):


All Music Education courses must be completed with a grade of ‘C’ or better to fulfill requirement.

Secondary Piano or Secondary Voice (4 credits):


KEYBOARD PROFICIENCY: All music majors must pass a keyboard proficiency examination before graduation. Music Education and Music Business majors must pass the keyboard proficiency examination before their internship or student teaching. Further information about this requirement is available on the school’s web site.

*Piano Principals in the Choral/General Education Concentration take courses listed under the Secondary Voice section.

Ensembles (4-7 credits)


Music majors must participate in ensembles at least seven semesters of their baccalaureate program. After degree requirements are satisfied, ensembles may be taken for zero or one credit:
