Gerontology Certificate

The Gerontology Certificate prepares students with the knowledge and experience necessary to succeed in age-related careers. The Certificate is available for the following majors: Human Development and Family Studies, Public Health, Physical Education Exercise Science, Social Work, Applied Medicine, Psychology, and the Nonprofit Leadership minor.

Core Courses (7 credits):

AHS 302 - Health Promotion and Aging 3 Credits
AHS 305 - Society and Aging 3 Credits
AHS 450 - Gerontology Professional Experience 1 Credits

Elective Courses (choose 3 credits from the following):

PE 483 - Fitness Through the Lifespan 3 Credits
PSY 266 - Developmental Psychology 3 Credits
PSY 466 - Advanced Lifespan Developmental Psychology 3 Credits
SOWK 241 - Human Development and Ecological Systems 3 Credits

Note:

Human Development and Family Studies majors who satisfactorily complete AHS 237 and AHS 238 may count those courses as their elective for the Gerontology Certificate.

Practical Experiences (minimum 3 credits; choose one of the following):

AHS 449 - Internship in Human Development and Family Science 3 Credits
AHS 491 - Public Health Internship 3 Credits
PE 490 - Internship 6 Credits
PSY 484 - Field Work in Psychology 3 Credits
SOWK 498 - Field Practice & Seminar I 4 Credits
SOWK 499 - Field Practicum and Seminar II 4 Credits
Practical experiences must be a minimum of 120 hours and completed in a setting that serves adults age 65 or older. AHS 450 is a co-req for all Gerontology Certificate practical experiences.
