Accredited programs in applied medicine and rehabilitation educate and prepare students to be professionals in the rapidly expanding health care professions. The Applied Medicine and Rehabilitation Department offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Medicine. The Applied Medicine degree is intended to prepare students for graduate programs in Athletic Training, Physician Assistant Studies, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and other advanced professional programs. The Department also offers a minor in Advanced Myoskeletal Massage Therapy for students seeking to complement their work in rehabilitation services and career opportunities.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Degree Offered

The Applied Medicine degree provides coursework that will prepare students for advanced professional degree programs. The core course work in the degree emphasizes strong theoretical foundations within applied medicine and rehabilitation science, as well as critical thinking and problem solving skills associated with obtaining clinical psychomotor skills. Students also benefit from hands-on clinical education experiences with various health care professionals.

Departmental Opportunities

Located in the Sycamore Wellness and Applied Medicine Center, the Applied Medicine and Rehabilitation Department includes a modern, fully equipped sports medicine and performance center, physical therapy and sports medicine clinic, clinical instructional laboratories, and an active Applied Medicine Research Center. Further, students are continually engaged in interprofessional educational opportunities to prepare them for the health care workforce.

Faculty and staff are active in advising students in all aspects of their educational preparation. It is advantageous for students to develop a dynamic relationship with their advisor during their progress through the major. All undergraduate majors and minors are encouraged to become a part of the pre-professional clubs (Student Occupational Therapy Undergrad, Pre-Physician Assistant Association, Pre-Physical Therapy) on campus. The focus of these organizations are to enhance and facilitate student needs as they develop and mature through the program.

Graduates of the Applied Medicine Program are prepared to pursue graduate study in areas such as advanced athletic training, physical therapy, physician’s assistant programs, occupational therapy, medical schools, exercise science, biomechanics, cardiac rehabilitation, and chiropractic medicine.

Experiential Learning

Applied Medicine majors engage in experiential learning through clinical experiences, on-campus or in the community.  During clinical experiences, students engage in patient care experiences within the community for 5-10 hours per week at an assigned clinical education site.
