Art Learning Outcomes


2-Dimensional Art Learning Outcomes 
Outcome 1: Appreciation for the Periods and Styles of Art - A thorough knowledge and appreciation for the periods and styles of art and the various and multifaceted social and cultural components that influenced them
1.1 Major styles, periods, and philosophies of art: Identifies the major styles, periods, and philosophies of art and their relationship to the making of art [NASAD H.XI.C.2].
Outcome 2: Theoretical Framework Underpinning of 2-D Art—An understanding of the theoretical framework that is the underpinning of 2-dimensional art and the capacity to communicate it.
2.1 Elements and vocabulary of art/design: Understands the common elements and vocabulary of art/design and of the interaction of these elements and be able to employ this knowledge in analysis [NASAD H.VIII.B.2b].
2.2 Historical achievements, major issues, processes: Gains familiarity with the historical achievements, current major issues, processes and directions in art [NASAD H.VIII.B.1a.(3)].
2.3 Similarities, differences, and relationships: Demonstrates understanding of the similarities, differences, and relationships among the various 2D media and processes.
Outcome 3: Technical Expertise in Students’ Concentration(s)–A level of technical expertise in students’ concentration(s).
3.1 Conceives, designs, and creates works: Conceives, designs, and creates works in the chosen concentration [NASAD H.IX.h.3c].
3.2 Utilizes technologies and equipment: Utilizes technologies and equipment applicable to two–dimensional art [NASAD H.VIII.B.3].
Outcome 4: Ability to Think Conceptually and Critically—The cognitive ability to think conceptually and critically, and to demonstrate these both visually and verbally.
4.1 Knowledge of various aesthetic issues, processes Displays knowledge of various aesthetic issues, processes, and media and their relationship to the conceptualization, development, and completion of works of art [NASAD H.IX.H.3d].
4.2 Works independently on 2-D art problems Works independently on a variety of two–dimensional art problems by combining, as appropriate to the issue, their capabilities in studio, analysis, history, and technology [NASAD H.VIII.B4].
4.3 Analyzes works of two–dimensional art Analyzes works of two–dimensional art perceptively and evaluates them critically [NASAD H.VIII.B.2a].

Outcome 1: Knowledge and Appreciation of Art History—Students will develop a thorough knowledge and appreciation for the periods and styles in art history and the context within which works of art are made.
1.1 Identify monuments and artists: Identifies key monuments and principle artists of major stylistic periods.
1.2 Analyze works of art: Analyzes works of art using formal analysis and theoretical and critical perspectives.

Outcome 2: Understanding of the Theoretical Framework—Students will develop an understanding of the theoretical framework that is the underpinning of art history and the capacity to communicate it.
2.1 Demonstrates knowledge of tools and techniques: Demonstrates knowledge of the tools and techniques of art historical scholarship.
Outcome 3: Develop a Level of Technical Expertise—Students will develop a level of technical expertise in art history.
3.1 Analyzes works of art from different perspectives Analyzes works of art from formal, theoretical and critical perspectives and write persuasively about an art historical problem.

3.2 Ability to develop and write a scholarly research paper Demonstrates the ability to develop and write a scholarly research paper that is written effectively and persuasively with appropriate bibliography and documentation.

Graphic Design Learning Outcomes 
Outcome 1: Knowledge and Appreciation for the Periods and Styles of Art—A thorough knowledge and appreciation for the periods and styles of art and the various and multifaceted social and cultural components that influenced them.
1.1 Knowledge of art/design history, theory, and criticism: Displays knowledge of art/design history, theory, and criticism from a variety of perspectives, including those of art history, linguistics, communication and information theory, technology, and the social and cultural use of design objects (NASAD H.IX.J.3e).
Outcome 2: Understanding of the Theoretical Framework—An understanding of the theoretical framework that is the underpinning of 2- Dimensional Art and the capacity to communicate it.
2.1 Understands principles of visual organization: Demonstrates an understanding of principles of visual organization and composition and develops solutions in response to communication problems (NASAD H.IX.J.3.c).
2.2 Understands the common elements/vocabulary of art: Demonstrates the interaction between common elements and vocabulary of art and design in an analysis. (NASAD H.VIII.B.2b).
2.3 Demonstrates understanding of individual interest: Demonstrates understanding/choices of areas of individual interest related to the concentration. (NASAD H.VIII.D.4).
Outcome 3: Advanced Level of Technical Expertise—An advanced level of technical expertise within the students’ concentration.
3.1 Acquires working knowledge of technologies/equipment: Acquires working knowledge of technologies and equipment applicable to their concentration (NASAD H.VIII.B.3).
3.2 Demonstrates use of tools and technology: Demonstrates appropriate use of tools and technology in the creation, reproduction and distribution of visual messages (NASAD H.IX.J.3d).
Outcome 4: Ability to Think Conceptually and Critically.
4.1 Develops ability to solve communication problems: Develops ability to solve communication problems, including skills of problem identification, research and information gathering, analysis, process and evaluation of outcomes (NASAD H.IX.J.3a).
