Learning Outcomes  

Students in the Social Studies Education major receive broad training in the theory and practice of teaching with the aim of becoming licensed at the junior high or high school level. In addition, student select at least two of the following concentrations as content specialists: economics, geography, government, history, psychology, or sociology.

Courses Required for Teaching Areas:


Students should choose two teaching areas and consult the Social Science Education Web site for a list of elective options.

Courses Required for Disciplines not Chosen as Teaching Areas (9-12 credits):


For each non-teaching area, students are required to complete one course in three of the four areas other than those selected as teaching areas, for a total of 9 credits (for accreditation purposes students should take either the required Psychology course OR a required Sociology course, but not both).

There is one exception to this pattern; students who do not choose history as one of their teaching areas must complete two history courses and one course in each other teaching area not chosen, for a total of 12 credits.

Required Professional Education (4 credits):


Four hours are required in the Senior High-Junior High/Middle School Professional Education sequence described in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Media Technology.

Students pursuing the social studies major must also fulfill the requirements of the teacher education program listed below.

This program has the following minimum GPA requirements: 2.50 overall GPA. This is a four and a half year program. Student teaching will be in the student’s final semester. Students who are admitted to the University in good standing and who have satisfactorily completed all prerequisites may apply for admission to the educator preparation program BCP I.
