Music Composition Major

Learning Outcomes  

The Music Composition major is designed to develop the theoretical and practical capacities of students to compose works of music. It prepares them for advanced study and careers in music composition. 

Musicianship (3 credits)


History and Literature (12 credits):

KEYBOARD PROFICIENCY: All music majors must pass a keyboard proficiency examination before graduation. Music Education and Music Business majors must pass the keyboard proficiency examination before their internship or student teaching. Students must enroll in six semesters of performance study.

Ensembles (7 credits):


Music majors must participate in ensembles at least seven semesters of their baccalaureate program. After degree requirements are satisfied, ensembles may be taken for zero or one credit.

Composition (14 credits):


Event Attendance


A large number of concerts and recitals representing a broad spectrum of musical styles and genres occurs every semester. This resource of musical events is an integral part of a musician’s training. All music majors and minors must attend a specified number of concerts, recitals, and Contemporary Music Festival events before graduation. Information concerning this requirement is available in the school office.
