Science Education Major (Dual Field)

(56-64 semester hours minimum)

The science education major is an interdisciplinary program that combines content area course work in two science and/or mathematics areas (biology, chemistry, earth/space science, mathematics, physical science, and physics). Because the physical science major requires physics, chemistry, and earth science, a minor area is not required. The program contains four components: general science requirements, one principal content area (major), one supporting content area (minor) (excluding physical science), and content area teaching methodology courses. Students who complete a major or minor area in science teaching will have satisfied the Liberal Studies requirement in Scientific and Mathematical Studies.

Science Education Content Areas

Students who elect a science education major will find the curriculum for science education content areas described under the respective departments. The content areas are:

Biology  See Departments of Biology
Chemistry  See Department of Chemistry
Earth Space Science  See Department of Geography, Geology, and Anthropology
Mathematics  See Department of Mathematics and Computer Science
Physics  See Department of Physics
Physical Science  See Department of Chemistry and Department of Physics

Note:

Students must also complete two self-paced instructional modules concerned with substance abuse and human nutrition or approved substitutes. For information about these modules, consult with the Center for Science Education faculty advisor and/or coordinator. Students combining areas of teaching spe- cialization should use the listings below to determine in which departments the specialization is listed.
