Degrees Offered

The traditional program leading to a bachelor of science degree with a major in nursing is a four year program of study combining theory and clinical nursing courses, required support courses, and General Education courses. The baccalaureate degree is recognized as the basic preparation for professional nursing practice, and prepares the graduate as a generalist. Baccalaureate nursing education is foundational for graduate study in nursing.

The Baccalaureate Degree Nursing Program offers alternative tracks through which registered nurses and practical/vocational nurses may complete a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Licensed practical nurses and licensed vocational nurses completing the program would be eligible to apply to take the registered nurses licensure examination the same as traditional students. The alternative tracks can be completed through Web-based distance learning or in part via traditional campus based classes. Students are held to the same progression, retention, and dismissal policies as students in the traditional four year baccalaureate track.

Departmental Opportunities

Faculty within the programs are dedicated to providing quality experiential learning opportunities through course design, clinical experiences, and service learning projects. Residence hall accommodations include dedicated housing for student nurses. Students are assigned an academic advisor, and are encouraged to maintain a working relationship with their advisor throughout their program of study to review plans and progress toward the attainment of educational objectives. Leadership opportunities for students are available though the Indiana State University Student Nurses Association, Lambda Sigma Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, International Honor Society of Nursing, and other University organizations.

Nursing students pay the same University fees as other students including laboratory and distance education fees for designated courses. Other expenses specific to the program of study may include pre-admission testing, assessment and remediation materials, uniforms and equipment, as well as books, other instructional materials, and supplies. There are also fees associated with application for R.N. licensure and licensure examination (NCLEX-RN). Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from health care agencies utilized for clinical experiences.
