The University has formed a new College of Nursing, Health, and Human Services. The founding units are the College of Health and Human Performance and the College of Nursing. Individual degree programs will remain the same and are unaffected at this time by the formation of the new college. Academic departments and related services will continue to be operated out of the former college offices. Changes may be initiated throughout this transition.

NURSING

The nursing programs at Indiana State University admitted their first class of students in September 1963. Currently the college offers a Baccalaureate Degree Nursing Program that includes three tracks: a traditional Baccalaureate Track, a Baccalaureate Track for students entering the program with registered nurse licensure, and a baccalaureate track for students entering the program with licensed practical nurse licensure. In January 1986 a program of graduate nursing studies that leads to a master of science degree was initiated.

The purpose of the nursing curricula is to prepare an educated person and contributing citizen to function as a competent, caring practitioner of nursing for diverse client populations. A complete statement of the faculty’s philosophy and the outcomes of the undergraduate and graduate programs can be obtained from the nursing administrative office or viewed on the nursing Web site.

The bachelor of science degree is the basic level of preparation offered as a nursing degree at ISU. Graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) for entry into practice as a Registered Nurse. The programs leading to baccalaureate and master’s degrees are accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. (NLNAC). The Baccalaureate Degree Nursing Program is also accredited by the Indiana State Board of Nursing.

HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES

The former College of Health and Human Performance was established in 1965 and consisted of the departments of athletic training; health, safety, and environmental health sciences; physical education; and recreation and sport management.

Today, these areas of study are designed to prepare students to enter the following professional fields of health and disease/injury prevention in community health education, therapeutic recreation, athletic training, exercise science/fitness, occupational safety management, and driver and traffic safety; teaching health education or physical education with specializations in coaching; and management of fitness, recreation, safety, and sport facilities and organizations. In order to provide students with greater career flexibility, opportunities are also offered in the areas of occupational toxicology/industrial hygiene and driver and motorcycle safety education.

Through responsive, collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumni, schools, and business and industry, the programs’ missions are to propagate an end product of high esteem which impacts societal needs.

Quality support services contribute to student success as all faculty are dedicated to providing students with effective academic advising. All students are assigned a faculty advisor to assist with academic planning.

Faculty are also dedicated to providing quality experiential learning opportunities through course design, internships, and service learning projects. Study abroad experiences are available in various majors with study sites in over 80 countries.

Recognition that the future success of the United States depends on the health and physical well-being of its population and environment has increased the career opportunities of programs’ graduates for positions in business, industry, commerce, education, government, and public affairs.
