Communication M.S.

(35 semester hours minimum)

The M.A. Program requires the completion of 32 semester hours, including a thesis or a creative project with an oral defense. The non-thesis M.S. Program requires 35 semester hours  and successful completion of a comprehensive oral examination. Half of  all courses in the master’s program must be taken at the 600 level or above.

Communication is the major in which all departmental graduate students are enrolled. A minimum of 26 semester hours in communication must be taken in the M.A. degree major, 23 semester hours in communication in the master of science degree major.

Each graduate student selects an area of specialization within the major. Areas of specialization within the M.A. Program must include 14 semester hours; 14 semester hours are also required within the M.S. Program.

Choose one of the following specializations:


Specialization in Communication Studies:


  • 14 hours of directed electives chosen in consultation with the student’s graduate advisor among courses and independent study in communication studies.

Specialization in General Studies:


  • 20 hours of directed electives chosen in consultation with the student’s graduate advisor from among courses and independent study in the Department of Communication.

Specialization in Radio/Television/Film:


  • 17 hours of directed electives chosen in consultation with the student’s graduate advisor from among courses and independent study relating to radio/television/film.

Electives:


  • 6 hours of graduate study elect ed in consultation with the student’s graduate advisor.

Culminating Experience:


Successful completion of an oral examination over course work in the student’s specialization. (Note: Guidelines for the oral examination are available in the Department  of Communication office.)
