Geoscience M.S.

(33 credits)

The Geoscience MS degree provides a solid, interdisciplinary background in the study of Earth systems and processes in both the modern day and the geologic past. Classes are focused on experiential learning, critical thinking, and field experiences. Our program prepares graduates for a wide range of career options in fields including geology, geography, and archeology.

Students work closely with their research advisor and committee to complete their degree and research requirements. Both thesis and non-thesis options are available.

Required Courses (9 credits):

ENVI 733 - Seminar in Earth and Environmental Systems 3 Credits
Choose one of the following:
ENVI 588 - Geoscience Research Methods 3 Credits
ENVI 611 - Research Design 3 Credits
Choose one of the following:
ENVI 552 - Quaternary Environments 3 Credits
ENVI 571 - Quaternary Paleoecology 3 Credits

Students will choose either the thesis or non-thesis option as listed below.

Thesis option (24 credits):

Choose one of the following for 6 credits:

GEOG 699 - Master’s Thesis 6 Credits
OR
Additionally, students will choose 18 credits of directed electives to be determined in consultation with the student’s advisor.
GEOL 699 - Master’s Thesis 6 Credits

Non Thesis Option (24 credits):

Choose one of the following for 3 credits:

GEOG 629 - Individual Research in Geography and Sustainability 1-6 Credits
OR
Additionally, students will choose 21 credits of directed electives to be determined in consultation with the student’s advisor.
GEOL 697 - Research Seminar in Geology 1-6 Credits

Note:

At least 17 credits must be earned in courses numbered 600 or above.
