Students in the Social Studies Education major receive broad training in the theory and practice of teaching with the aim of becoming licensed at the junior high or high school level. In addition, student select at least two of the following concentrations as content specialists: economics, geography, government, history, psychology, or sociology.

Students should choose two teaching areas and consult the Social Science Education Web site for a list of elective options.
Elective Option 3 credits
[Includes any class in History, (excepting specified required courses–HIST 101, 102, and 302), or an approved shared elective. HIST 113 or 313 are accepted]
300-400-level Directed Elective in United States history 6 credits
[Three of these credits must be at the 400-level]
400-level Directed Elective in European history 3 credits
400-level Directed Elective in Wider World history 3 credits
Four hours are required in the Senior High-Junior High/Middle School Professional Education sequence described in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Media Technology.
