English Major

(48 credits)

The English major fosters skills in critical analysis, independent thinking, creativity, research, and writing through a focus on both literature and creative writing. The program is designed to lay a foundation for a wide range of careers in which clear communication and thinking, as well as research skills, are needed.

Required English Courses (24 credits):

ENG 230 - Literary Analysis 3 credits
ENG 240 - American Literature I 3 credits
ENG 241 - American Literature II 3 credits
ENG 250 - British Literature I 3 credits
ENG 251 - British Literature II 3 credits
ENG 436 - Topics in World Literature 3 credits
ENG 460 - Shakespeare 3 credits
ENG 484 - Interrelations of Literature 3 credits

Electives (18 credits):

18 credits, including:

3 credits in English Language;

3 credits in Diversity;

3 credits in Popular Culture;

3 credits in advanced American Literature;

3 credits in advanced British Literature before 1800;

3 credits in advanced British Literature since 1800.

Foundational Studies Requirements (6 credits):

ENG 108 - Writing about Literature and Culture 3 credits
ENG 308 - Practical Literary Criticism 3 credits

Note:

All electives must be approved by an advisor in the department.

Foreign Language Recommendation:

English majors considering graduate work in English should take substantial work in at least one foreign language. French, German, and/or Latin are recommended.
