Elementary Education Major

Required Subject Matter (26 credits minimum):

A grade of C or better is required in each course as well as a minimum grade point average of 2.5. An approved Fine Arts class (ART 151 or ARTE 390) 3-4 credits. An approved History class (HIST 113) restricted to Elementary Education majors.

• ART 151 - Visual Arts in Civilization 3 credits

• or

• ARTE 390 - Visual Arts in Elementary Schools 4 credits (or an approved Fine Arts class)
• EPSY 341 - Education in a Multicultural Society 3 credits (May fulfill Foundational Studies)
• AHS 327 - School Health for the Elementary Teacher 3 credits
• HIST 113 - Topics in History 3 credits (an approved class, restricted to Elementary Education majors)
• MATH 305 - Concepts of Number and Operations 3 credits (May not be taken by correspondence)
• MUS 325 - Music in the Education of Children 3 credits
• PE 348 - Methods of Teaching Physical Education in Elementary Schools 2 credits
• ENG 280 - Children’s Literature 3 credits
• MATH 306 - Concepts of Geometry 3 credits

Professional Education Component (59 credits minimum):

The professional education component in elementary education consists of a sequential pattern of course work integrated into phases. Each subsequent phase has the previous phase as a prerequisite. Prior to enrolling in Phase II, the student must have been admitted to Becoming a Complete Professional I. Early and continuous experiences with children in school settings are included throughout the professional education component and are an integral part of the professional courses. These practicum experiences are required to successfully complete each professional course, but do not carry course credit. A grade of C or better is required in each course as well as a minimum grade point average of 2.5.
