The College of Technology was established in December 1967, and includes three departments as follows: Aviation Technology; Electronics, Computer, and Mechanical Engineering Technology; and Technology Management.

Graduate study in the College of Technology is available to baccalaureate degree graduates from numerous disciplines including: advanced manufacturing management, automation and control engineering technology, aviation management, automotive technology management, computer engineering technology, construction management, electronics technology, human resource development for higher education and industry, mechanical engineering technology, packaging, professional aviation flight technology, technology and engineering education, technology management, and other technology or scientific based programs.

Students who have baccalaureate degrees in related technology or scientific areas who desire to pursue graduate study should consult with the dean of the College of Technology, the associate dean, and the director of the Ph.D. in Technology Management Program, or one of the coordinators of master’s degrees offered by the College of Technology.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY PROGRAM

Consortium for Doctoral Studies in Technology

The graduate program leading to a doctor of philosophy in technology management is offered through the College of Technology at Indiana State University in cooperation with a consortium of four additional universities. This unique organization of universities having studies in technology includes Bowling Green State University; University of Central Missouri; East Carolina University; Indiana State University; and North Carolina A&T State University. The consortium brings together leading schools/colleges of technology in the United States to capitalize on existing resources and expertise in specialized areas of technology. The Consortium university faculty have national recognition for their expertise and leadership in the development of the profession.

Consortium Coordinating Council

The Consortium Coordinating Council includes one representative from each of the participating universities, including Indiana State University, plus the director of the Ph.D. in Technology Management Program from Indiana State University. Selection of each representative is made by the participating university, but must come from their school of technology, industrial technology department, or other appropriate department.
The responsibility of the Consortium Coordinating Council is to advise and recommend on the development and operation of the consortium Ph.D. in Technology Management Program.

INTRODUCTION

The objectives of the Ph.D. in Technology Management Program are to: enhance the level of study in selected technologies at the doctoral level providing opportunities for research in the development, application, and transmission of technological knowledge; prepare specialists who provide leadership in technology; and support the industrial, business, and government communities in the implementation and use of technology.

The program is delivered using advanced communication technologies providing the opportunity for studies at different locations. Residency requirements can be met with minimal disruption to individual lifestyles. Regulations for the Ph.D. in technology management are found on the program Web page. In those instances that a regulation is not defined for the program, the ISU Graduate Catalog is the defining document.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Application for admission is made to the College of Graduate and Professional Studies at Indiana State University. The dean of the College of Graduate and Professional Studies, advised by the director of the Technology Management Program, in consultation with the program coordinator at the consortium university, makes the recommendation for admission to the program. Admission requirements include:

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
  2. Graduate grade index of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale (if applicant has bachelor’s degree only, the required grade point average is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale)
  3. Graduate Record Examination scores of 500 on each of the Verbal and Quantitative Scales or Graduate Management Admission Test scores of 31 on each of the Verbal and Quantitative Scales
  4. Five letters of recommendation.
  5. Completion of career goal statement.
  6. Six thousand hours (three years) of validated occupational experience appropriate to the technical specialization.

INTRODUCTION

The graduate programs in industrial technology, career and technical education, human resource development, and technology education are offered in the Department of Technology Management. The master of science in career and technical education and technology education degrees meet the professionalization licensing requirements for secondary teaching.

Career and Technical Education

Program Coordinator: Dr. James Smallwood

The Career and Technical Education Program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary for career development, workforce readiness, and personal success in a technological and global society. The career and technical education graduate program prepares students as effective instructors and administrators to enter and advance in the public school system, the private sector, post-secondary education, and government careers at the state, national, and international level.

Human Resource Development for Higher Education and Industry

Program Coordinator: Dr. Dorothy Carole Yaw

The master of science degree in human resource development for higher education and industry is designed for individuals seeking positions involving the development of people in work roles in industry, government, and higher education and has two options. One option is to increase specialization in the area of current employment through selected courses in other disciplines. The second is to conduct research through a thesis. The degree program is open to persons who do not have an undergraduate degree in human resource development. Human Resource Development 605 may be required to meet undergraduate deficiencies.

Industrial Technology

Program Coordinator: Dr. Michael A. Hayden

The master of science in Industrial Technology Program is meant to further the academic preparation and professional advancement of the baccalaureate graduate with a degree in and professional orientation toward technology management or similar industrial-technical field. The program provides theoretical and practical learning experiences to prepare graduates for leadership positions in industry and/or prepare them for doctoral level programs such as the Ph.D. in Technology Management. Unconditional entrance to the program requires a baccalaureate degree closely related to one of the following technical areas: automotive; electronics or computer; manufacturing; mechanical engineering technology; packaging; or similar technical, engineering technology, or technology management field.

This degree is an interdisciplinary graduate major within the College of Technology and is administered by the Department of Technology Management. The three cooperating departments are: Aviation Technology; Electronics, Computer, and Mechanical Engineering Technology; and Technology Management. The technical concentration is meant to allow an individualized contract of study that best fits the student’s prior course work, experiences, and goals.

Technology Education

The Technology and Engineering Education Program masters degree provides students with in-depth theoretical and practical understanding of technology and engineering education so they may improve their research and teaching effectiveness in the secondary schools. The master of science program is designed to meet the needs of current technology and engineering education teachers to further their knowledge of technology, innovation, design, and engineering.

Curriculum and Instruction with Specialization in Industrial Technology Education

Areas of specialization in career and technical education, human resource development, and technology education, as part of the program leading to the doctor of philosophy degree, are available through cooperative agreements with the College of Education.
