MISSION
The central mission of the College of Arts and Sciences is to provide students with a nationally recognized, contemporary education in the liberal arts and sciences. The college fosters an environment that advances innovative and integrative inquiry and engagement, builds on faculty expertise and institutional heritage, and involves students as collaborators in enhancing and developing the public good.
INTRODUCTION
Indiana State University’s College of Arts and Sciences was established by the Board of Trustees in 1962 and is the largest academic unit of the University. It houses 23 departments and offers an array of master’s and doctoral programs. Graduate faculty members in the college are leaders in their fields of expertise and are fundamental in delivering courses and providing research and educational opportunities to graduate students throughout the University.
Along with teaching, research and public service are central to the college’s mission. Among the ways in which the college fosters its faculty members’ and students’ research is its sponsorship of research centers. Among these are its Center for Biodiversity Studies, Center for Governmental Services, and Center for Health, Religion, and Spirituality. Additional centers include the Sociology Research Laboratory, home of the Compass II Project, the renowned Folklore Archive, and the innovative Remote Sensing Laboratory. Graduate students and faculty also work with public service units such as the new Climatology Laboratory, which provides weather information to the Terre Haute region, and the nationally recognized Psychology Clinic, which provides psychological services and works with community mental health centers, hospitals, and other agencies.
Graduate programs in the college are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, National Association of Schools of Music, American Dietetics Association, American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, Public Relations Society of America, and American Psychological Association.
The individual master’s and doctoral programs in the college are described in detail in the Catalog.
