3 credits
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the field of African and African American studies. It is intended as a survey of the major concepts, definitions, and areas of study. Students will be able to discuss the relationship of Africans in the Americas to their cultural groups and to see how Africans have maintained institutions and built new forms of human relations. This course will examine major components of the African experience in the Diaspora from an interdisciplinary perspective. All students will be able to gain a better understanding and appreciation of African-American history, social organization, creativity (e.g. artistry, music), psychology, religion, political participation, cultural institutions, and the socio-economic and educational development that have continued to shape a very significant portion of American society in general.
