Indiana University School of Medicine-Terre Haute
The Indiana University School of Medicine - Terre Haute offers a unique and enriching environment for medical education as part of the statewide Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) system. Located on the campus of Indiana State University, IUSM-Terre Haute allows students to complete all four years of medical school while benefiting from a close-knit community, hands-on clinical experiences, and a curriculum designed to prepare future physicians for the challenges of modern healthcare.
From the very beginning of their medical education, students at IUSM-Terre Haute are immersed in a robust foundational curriculum. The first year includes courses such as Transitions I, which introduces students to the medical profession and its ethical, legal, and social dimensions, and Human Structure, where students explore human anatomy through dissection and imaging. They also delve into Molecules to Cells to Tissues, gaining an understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of health and disease, while Foundations of Clinical Practice I equips them with essential skills like patient communication and physical examination. Additional courses, such as Fundamentals of Health and Disease, Host Defense, and Neuroscience and Behavior, provide a comprehensive grounding in the biomedical sciences. Early clinical exposure is a hallmark of the program, with students gaining real-world experience through partnerships with local and regional healthcare providers, including Union Health System, Horizon Health, Sullivan County Community Hospital, and Greene County General Hospital.
In the second year, students build on this foundation with the Understanding Diseases of Systems courses, which cover Cardiovascular and Hematology, Renal and Respiratory, Gastrointestinal and Nutrition, Musculoskeletal and Dermatology, and Endocrinology and Reproductive Biology. These courses are paired with Fundamentals of Clinical Practice II, further honing clinical skills and preparing students for the next phase of their training. As they progress to Phases II and III, students transition to clinical clerkships, completing required and elective rotations across Indiana’s extensive network of hospitals and health systems. This statewide approach ensures a diverse and well-rounded clinical education, equipping students with the experience they need to excel in their chosen fields.
A distinctive feature of the Terre Haute campus is its Rural Medical Education Program, established in 2008 to address the critical need for physicians in rural communities. Selected students spend all four years of medical school at the Terre Haute campus, where they benefit from early and intensive clinical skill acquisition, a curriculum tailored to the perspectives of rural physicians and patients, and immersive experiences in the community context of rural medicine. This program not only provides educational opportunities for students from rural Indiana but also plays a vital role in addressing physician shortages in underserved areas.
In addition to the Rural Medical Education Program, IUSM-Terre Haute collaborates with Indiana State University on the Bachelor/Medical Doctor (B/MD) Program, an accelerated pathway for high-achieving students from rural counties. Since 1997, this program has allowed participants to complete their undergraduate degree at Indiana State University and their medical degree at IUSM, creating a seamless transition from undergraduate to medical education. Designed to attract and support students committed to serving rural communities, the B/MD Program is a testament to the campus’s dedication to improving healthcare access across Indiana.
