The Master of Arts in English is a non-terminal degree requiring research, theory, and literature courses. Students will select a concentration in either British and American literature or Writing, which requires a culminating experience of a master’s exam, creative project, or thesis. The Master of Arts in English with a Concentration in British and American Literature prepares students for further graduate work in literary studies or related areas and also serves those preparing to teach or work in administration at the high school or college level. The Master of Arts in English with a Concentration in Writing is designed for students planning further graduate work in creative writing, rhetoric/composition, or related areas; for those preparing to teach or work in administration at the high school or college level; and for those planning to practice writing or editing in other professions. For the culminating experience, creative writing students produce a lengthy project—for instance, a novel or a collection of stories or poems.

If taking ENG 692-Master’s Paper as the culminating experience, choose 9 credits of directed electives from the list below. If taking ENG 699-Master’s Thesis as the culminating experience, choose 6 credits of directed electives from the list below. Topics courses can be repeated for credit if the topic content is different. Additional Electives: (6 credits)
At least 6 credits of additional electives either in literature or outside the area of concentration, or a combination. May be taken through other departments and programs when approved by the Director of Graduate Studies in English. Culminating Experience (3-6 credits):

Directed Electives (12-15 credits):
If taking ENG 692-Master’s Paper or ENG 698-Creative Project as the culminating experience, choose 15 credits of directed electives in composition/rhetoric, creative writing, or technical writing. Students whose culminating experience is a work of creative writing must take a creative writing workshop in at least two of the following genres: poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. If taking ENG 699-Master’s Thesis as the culminating experience, choose 12 credits of directed electives in composition/rhetoric, creative writing, or technical writing. Courses in the 500 series are open to undergraduates as *400 series. Graduate students are required to do additional work of a research nature. A course taken at the 400 level may not be repeated at the 500 level. |
