The accelerated master’s degree program in Occupational Safety Management is developed to help eligible undergraduate students apply for master’s degree at the end of their junior year and start their graduate studies during their senior year.
The Occupational Safety Management program is intended for individuals interested in achieving managerial positions in industrial safety. The curriculum provides a broad foundation of theoretical and practical knowledge of safety administration. It emphasizes the skills and methodologies of problem solving and analysis so critical for sophisticated planners and managers in the private and public sectors of occupational safety and health. Content areas include systems safety, human factors engineering, program management and evaluation, safety law, and policy analysis. Employment opportunities are usually found in industry; federal, state, and local government agencies; insurance companies; the military; labor unions; consulting firms; and health care facilities.
In order to be eligible to apply for accelerated master’s program, students need to have a GPA of 3.0 or better and complete minimum of 96 credit hours of their undergraduate requirement by the end of their junior year. Assuming the students in the accelerated master’s degree are full-time students, they are expected to complete their requirement at the end of t the fifth year of their studies in ISU.
The accelerated master’s degree requires a minimum of 33 credit hours with thesis and non-thesis options. Total of 6 credits are dual level courses (500 level) taken during the senior year of undergraduate studies, another 6 credits are allocated for research methods and statistics, and 3 to 6 credit hours are allocated for culminating experience. Overall a minimum of 12 credit hours of Safety Management courses are required and the remaining 9-12 credits are electives which can be taken within the department or outside the department.
