Accelerated Masters: Biology Non-Thesis

This is an accelerated Degree program open to Biology Majors that meet the following criteria. Students woudl apply during the Junior year and be on track to complete their BS in four years. The putative student will be dual enrolled in the BS and MS program during their senior year. Upon completion of the BS it is expected that the student would complete their MS non-thesis in Biology during their fifth year.
Enrollment in Graduate Course as an ISU Undergraduate Student
A senior student at Indiana State University with an overall grade point average of 3.0 or above may be granted permission to enroll in a limited amount of 500-level graduate courses with approval of the student’s advisor, graduate program representative, and the dean of the College of Graduate and Professional Studies. Students in Accelerated Graduate Programs will be allowed to take up to 9 credit hours of 500-level courses and up to 6 credit hours of 600-level courses during their final year of undergraduate study.

Undergraduate Required Biological Sciences (24 Credits)
Undergraduate Prerequisites for the Biology Major (27-28 Credits)
Mathematics 3-4 credits
(a course in statistics or calculus, such as BIO 485 , or MATH 131 or MATH 241 ).
Undergraduate Electives (16 Credits)
A minimum of 16 credit hours beyond the core curriculum selected from the following or the appropriate emphasis. Please note that students may take up to 9 credits of 500 level electives as dual credit. 600 level courses may be taken in the senior year and will not count towards the 120 credit hour requirement for the undergraduate degree
Note
Biology 415 is an acceptable elective only for departmental majors pursuing a science education curriculum. Four credit hours of Biology 492 may also be used to fill the elective requirement.
A portion of the 16 hours of elective credit required of Biology majors beyond the core curriculum may be composed of courses from cognate areas, subject to the approval of the student’s advisor and in agreement with the department chairpersons. This excludes cognate courses that are prerequisite for courses in the Department of Biology.
Graduate Research
- BIO 692 - Research in Biology 1-10 credits
Graduate Major
At least 11-13 additional credits of Biology course work.
- BIO 690 - Seminar: Life Sciences 1 credits
Graduate Area Seminar
Minimum of 2 credits in the following:
- BIO 620 - Seminar: Systematics 2 credits
- BIO 630 - Seminar: Physiology 2 credits
- BIO 650 - Seminar: Ecology 2 credits
- BIO 670 - Seminar: Microbiology 2 credits
- BIO 680 - Seminar: Evolution and Genetics 2 credits
Graduate Other Requirements
6 credits of course work outside the department.
Graduate Electives
8 credits of directed electives.
Graduate Culminating Experience
Satisfactory performance on an oral and/or written examination given by an examining committee selected from the graduate faculty.
Note
Courses in the 500 series are open to undergraduates as *400 series. Graduate students are required to do additional work of a research nature. A course taken at the 400 level may not be repeated at the 500 level.
At least 16 credits must be in courses numbered 600 or above.
