Music Liberal Arts Major

This program is intended for those who wish to pursue a serious study of music and to acquire a broad liberal arts education.

(Piano and organ principals are excused from this requirement but must take 2 additional credits of music electives.)

Ensembles (2 credits)


Music majors must participate in ensembles at least seven semesters of their baccalaureate program. After degree requirements are satisfied, ensembles may be taken for zero or one credit.

Music Electives (5 credits)


Note:


All liberal arts majors complete a total of at least 66 credits of General Education outside music in order to meet the National Association of Schools of Music Standard: General studies normally occupy 55 percent to 70 percent of the total curriculum.

Keyboard Proficiency


All music majors must pass a keyboard proficiency examination before graduation. Music education majors must pass the keyboard proficiency examination before student teaching. Further information about this requirement is available on the school’s web site.

Event Attendance


A large number of concerts and recitals representing a broad spectrum of musical styles and genres occurs every semester. This resource of musical events is an integral part of a musician’s training. All music majors and minors must attend a specified number of concerts, recitals, and Contemporary Music Festival events before graduation. Information concerning this requirement is available in the school office.
