The Department of Teaching and Learning prepares students for professional careers in education. This includes undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs in elementary teaching, early childhood education, special education, secondary education, and curriculum and instruction. To add depth of knowledge, the department provides interdisciplinary studies, working with teaching majors across campus to ensure the success of the teaching candidate.
The teacher preparation program at Indiana State University has been approved by the Indiana Department of Education and by the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Licensure Regulations
Individuals interested in licensure programs are encouraged to consult Education Student Services in the Bayh College of Education before pursuing a program intended to result in licensure. Because of changes in educator licensing, up-to-date licensing information is not reflected in this Catalog.

Teaching and Learning is designed for those individuals who wish to develop leadership skills in instruction and curriculum planning in educational settings such as schools, community/technical colleges, business and industry, health services, and other social agencies. The program leading to the doctor of philosophy degree in curriculum and instruction is designed to prepare students for positions of educational leadership and research in public schools, colleges and universities, and governmental agencies.

Completion of the master of education degree in Teaching and Learning is for those students who wish to professionalize their initial license provided the student holds the standard elementary license and has completed five years of teaching experience.
The master’s degree program in special education is designed for students desiring advanced preparation for positions in special education in such agencies as public and private schools, child and family service agencies, medical settings, group homes, or other social service agencies.
