The College of Technology was established in December 1967, and includes five departments as follows: Applied Engineering and Technology Management; Aviation Technology; Built Environment; Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology; and Human Resource Development and Performance Technologies.

Graduate study in the College of Technology is available to baccalaureate degree graduates from numerous disciplines including: adult and career education; architectural engineering technology; automation and control engineering technology; automotive engineering technology; aviation management; bachelor of applied science; civil engineering technology; computer engineering technology; construction management; electronics engineering technology; engineering (BSE); engineering technology; engineering technology management; human resource development for higher education and industry; information technology; interior architecture design; manufacturing engineering technology; mechanical engineering technology; packaging engineering technology; professional aviation flight technology; safety management; technology and engineering education; textiles, apparel, and merchandising; unmanned systems; and other technology or scientific based programs. 

Students who have baccalaureate degrees in related technology or scientific areas who desire to pursue graduate study should consult with the Dean of the College of Technology, the Associate Dean of Curriculum, Accreditation, and Outreach, and the Director of the Ph.D. in Technology Management Program, or one of the coordinators of master’s degrees offered by the College of Technology.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY PROGRAM

Consortium for Doctoral Studies in Technology Management

The graduate program leading to a doctor of philosophy in technology management is offered through the College of Technology at Indiana State University in collaboration with a consortium of four additional universities. This unique organization of universities having studies in technology include Bowling Green State University; University of Central Missouri; East Carolina University; Indiana State University; and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. The consortium brings together these leading schools/colleges of technology in the United States to capitalize on existing resources and expertise in specialized areas of technology. The Consortium university faculty have been nationally recognized for their expertise and leadership in the development of the profession.

Consortium Coordinating Council

The Consortium Coordinating Council includes one representative from each of the five participating universities, who assumes the role of Program Coordinator for the respective institution.  The Director of the Ph.D. in Technology Management Program at Indiana State University is also a member of the Coordinating Council.  Selection of each Program Coordinator is based on recommendation by the participating university.  Affirmation of recommendation is managed through an approval process by the school/college of technology, industrial technology department, or other appropriate/approved technology area or department at each respective institution. The responsibility of the Consortium Coordinating Council is to advise and recommend on the development and operation of the consortium Ph.D. in Technology Management Program and/or population therein.

INTRODUCTION

The Doctor of Philosophy in Technology Management program is designed to prepare students for positions of leadership in the public and private sectors of society. At the conclusion of the program, graduates will have developed skills in research procedures, acquired expertise in instructional processes, and will be able to provide service to the industrial and educational community.

The program maintains most of the traditional requirements characteristic of advanced graduate study, but is unique in using the resources of a consortium of five universities who collaborate to present a well-rounded and robust program.  The component construct of the program is managed through online and face-to-face presentation platforms, but is considered a distance program.  These member universities have programs staffed by faculty having expertise in many areas of technology. Additionally, laboratories with specialized equipment are available that provide opportunities for research and study. Each university brings to the consortium unique philosophical quality and extensive library holdings that add depth and quality to the program.

Alternative communication technology is used to deliver key components of the program such as a general technology core, linking campuses to better serve students. This allows all members of the consortium to capitalize on the efficient use of existing resources while maintaining quality.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Application for admission is made to Indiana State University through the College of Graduate and Professional Studies.  Additionally, the applicant is required to attach specific materials to the Graduate Admission module (see Application web site:  http://www.indstate.edu/technology/consortphd-application for details).  The Director, in consultation with the program coordinator at each consortium university will make recommendation to the Dean of the College of Graduate and Professional Studies regarding admission of applicants to the program. 

Admission requirements include:

  • Master’s degree in relevant field from an accredited university. Original transcript(s) required.
  • Bachelor’s degree conferred – original transcript(s) submitted.
  • Graduate grade index of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale  
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) sent directly to Indiana State University, College of Graduate & Professional Studies.  Scores should meet or exceed the 50th percentile.  (GRE or GMAT scores must be current – no older than five years prior to the term of application).  
  • Five letters of recommendation. 
  • Submission of Career Goal Statement. 
  • Six thousand hours (three years) of validated occupational experience relevant to the field of technology management and/or a technical specialization.

TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT

The Master of Science in Technology Management (MSTM) Program is a 100% online distance deliverable program (with some courses also offered on campus) designed for baccalaureate graduates desiring and advanced position in industry and/or preparation for a doctoral programs such as the Ph.D. in Technology Management.

INTRODUCTION

The Department of Human Resource Development and Performance Technologies administers programs leading to the master’s and doctoral degrees. These programs enable students to specialize in career and technical education or human resource development.  Students may complete all requirements for either degree in the on-campus program or through distance education.

Areas of specialization in career and technical education and human resource development, as part of the program leading to the doctor of philosophy degree, are available through cooperative agreements with the College of Education.  To meet the license requirements for career and technical education director, the non-degree post-master’s program is provided.

The Department offers frequent opportunities for students to participate in professional activities in the field (internships), student activities in the department (Society of Human Resource Management), and scholarly activities at professional meetings (Academy of Human Resource Development and Association of Career and Technical Education). Students who are interested in conducting research may wish to assist in faculty-sponsored research projects or may wish to apply for funds to conduct their own research projects.

 

HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The master of science degree in human resource development for higher education and industry is designed for individuals seeking positions involving the development of people in work roles in industry, government, and higher education and has two options. One option is to increase specialization in the area of current employment through selected courses in other disciplines. The second is to conduct research through a thesis. The degree program is open to persons who do not have an undergraduate degree in human resource development. Human Resource Development 605 may be required to meet undergraduate deficiencies. 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants will meet the regular admission standards of the College of Graduate and Professional Studies and the following minimum standards for regular admission to any master’s degree program in the College of Technology:

  1. Graduation with a bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by an appropriate association such as the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.
  2. An undergraduate record with no deficiencies in the areas chosen for study and the completion of any undergraduate courses that may be needed for preparation for specific graduate courses as determined by advisement.
  3. Have earned a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in all undergraduate coursework; or have earned a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in all courses taken at the graduate level
  4. International students must meet the regular admission requirements of the College of Graduate and Professional Studies, including a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL test. (Students who possess a degree from an American university are not required to take the TOEFL.)

Applications for admission are only accepted for the Fall (August) and Spring (January) semesters.  Students are encouraged to apply early to ensure admission. Applications received after the following deadlines may be wait-listed pending an opening:

  • Fall semester: June 1

Prospective students who have completed other undergraduate programs may request evaluation of their programs of preparation for identification of deficiencies, the removal of which, with undergraduate courses, would qualify them for admission.

 

 CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The master of science degree in career and technical education provides the continued development of the professional and technical knowledge of individuals working in career technical education, including secondary school CTE faculty, two-year community college and technical college faculty, CTE administrators, and trainers in industry.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants will meet the regular admission standards of the College of Graduate and Professional Studies and the following minimum standards for regular admission to any master’s degree program in the College of Technology:

  1. Graduation with a bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by an appropriate association such as the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.
  2. An undergraduate record with no deficiencies in the areas chosen for study and the completion of any undergraduate courses that may be needed for preparation for specific graduate courses as determined by advisement.
  3. Have earned a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in all undergraduate coursework; or have earned a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in all courses taken at the graduate level
  4. International students must meet the regular admission requirements of the College of Graduate and Professional Studies, including a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL test. (Students who possess a degree from an American university are not required to take the TOEFL.)

Applications for admission are only accepted for the Fall (August) and Spring (January) semesters.  Students are encouraged to apply early to ensure admission. Applications received after the following deadlines may be wait-listed pending an opening:

  • Fall semester: June 1
  • Spring semester: November 1
