The College of Nursing, Health, and Human Services was created on July 1, 2007 with the intention to increase the visibility of health professions at ISU, empower the faculty who advocate for health professions, promote greater collaboration between health-oriented units, attract external resources, initiate and develop new health-related programs, strengthen ties with community partners, and better meet regional and state needs.

With this purpose, the college is committed to the mission of inspiring professionals and students through an interdisciplinary approach while developing skilled leaders, educators, researchers, and innovators in nursing, health, and human services. The college’s programs focus on the core values of caring, health, integrity, respect, and performance with the vision of becoming eminent in providing qualified professionals serving diverse populations through learning, leadership, scholarship, innovation, and community engagement. The faculty and staff are committed to providing students with a supportive learning environment that is progressive, challenging, and creative. Students within the college have the opportunity to obtain the necessary skills and credentials to become competent practicing professionals.

The Baccalaureate Nursing Program at Indiana State University admitted their first class of students in September 1963. Currently, the program is housed in two nursing departments within the College of Nursing, Health, and Human Services. The traditional four-year campus-based baccalaureate degree nursing track is administered through the Department of Baccalaureate Nursing. Distance education tracks for students entering the program with registered nurse licensure and for students entering with licensed practical nurse licensure are administered through the Department of Baccalaureate Nursing Completion.

Health and human services departments include Applied Health Sciences; Applied Medicine and Rehabilitation; Kinesiology, Recreation and Sport; and Social Work.

Today, these areas of study are designed to prepare students to enter the following professional fields of health and disease/injury prevention in community health education, therapeutic recreation, athletic training, exercise science/fitness, occupational safety management, and driver and traffic safety; teaching health education or physical education; and social work, with specializations in coaching; management of fitness, recreation, safety, and sport facilities and organizations. In order to provide students with greater career flexibility, opportunities are also offered in the areas of occupational toxicology/industrial hygiene and driver and motorcycle safety education.

Through responsive, collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumni, schools, and business and industry, the programs’ missions are to propagate an end product of high esteem which impacts societal needs.

Quality support services contribute to student success as all faculty are dedicated to providing students with effective academic advising. All students are assigned a faculty advisor to assist with academic planning.

Faculty are also dedicated to providing quality experiential learning opportunities through course design, internships, and service learning projects. Study abroad experiences are available in various majors with study sites in over 80 countries.

Recognition that the future success of the United States depends on the health and physical well-being of its population and environment has increased the career opportunities of programs’ graduates for positions in business, industry, commerce, education, government, and public affairs.
