The Department of Technology Management prepares students for professional careers in management, supervision, education, and training in a variety of technical disciplines. Students may choose from among several baccalaureate degree majors that offer a balance of classroom study and experience in modern laboratories responsive to change and the needs of industry. Baccalaureate degree programs are offered in advanced manufacturing management, career and technical education, construction management, human resource development, packaging, technology and engineering education, and technology management. Graduates from these degree programs are employed in various industrial companies, educational agencies, and government branches. Graduate programs are offered in career and technical education, human resource development, industrial technology, and technology and engineering education. Students planning graduate study should consult the Graduate Catalog for information about graduate degrees.
The DegreeLink Program
The Department of Technology Management offers baccalaureate degree-completion programs in career and technical education, human resource development, packaging, and technology management to students through the University’s DegreeLink Program. DegreeLink, an extended access, degree-completion program, enables students who have earned credit hours and associate degrees from accredited institutions to transfer credit hours as a block or on a course-by-course basis to baccalaureate degree programs. Students have the opportunity to complete the final two years of this program at a distance. (See the DegreeLink Program Description in the Catalog.)
Advanced Manufacturing Management
The advanced manufacturing management degree provides students with the knowledge and management skills needed to pursue a manufacturing career. Manufacturing, one of the leading industries in the United States, needs trained professionals who can improve processes and products in an increasingly competitive world market. Graduates are competent in both the technical and managerial aspects of advanced manufacturing and find employment as quality specialists, manufacturing engineers, project engineers, supervisor/managers, and in a variety of jobs in the manufacturing industry.
Career and Technical Education
The Career and Technical Education Program prepares career and technical teachers for secondary schools and post-secondary schools (career centers, technical institutes, correctional facilities, and community colleges) as well as administrators at the post-secondary school level. The program provides knowledge and skills in planning instruction, managing learning environments, assessing student performance, and providing appropriate instructional strategies to students who have or will have extensive work experience in a technical or trade area.
Career and technical education majors must have work experience or related technical college course work in the field in which they wish to teach. Technical credits (24 hours) may be awarded based on relevant trade certificates and/or related technical college credit transferred from other degree programs. Students are advised to contact an advisor to check on the documentation needed to verify the technical credits.
The Construction Management Program offers exciting education experiences that prepare students for a career as a professional constructor. Students receive education and course work in all aspects of construction from planning and scheduling to materials and structures. The program provides theoretical and practical learning experiences in both classroom and laboratory environments. Students receive training in planning, scheduling, estimating, and project management, and acquire many other skills necessary for a construction professional.
Human Resource Development for Higher Education and Industry
The purpose of the human resource development for higher education and industry degree is to prepare students to be effective human resource professionals providing essential services in industry, higher education, healthcare, social agencies, and government. Competencies designed into the program focus on planning, managing, organizing, and evaluating education, training, and other human resource development functions. Through its comprehensive, experiential focus, the program prepares students to lead in this exciting career field to prepare professionals for education in post-secondary and proprietary institutions, industry, business, and government agencies.
The packaging degree prepares students to become professionals in the challenging and demanding industrial environment of packaging engineering and management. Program instruction is designed to involve students in combinations of classroom learning situations and hands-on laboratory experiences.These activities allow students to explore the use and application of machines and test equipment, learn design techniques, and gain an understanding of the management function. The program utilizes new and well-equipped laboratories.
Technology and Engineering Education
The Technology and Engineering Education Program prepares students to teach in the areas of communications, construction, manufacturing, biotechnology, and transportation. The content of the degree is derived extensively from technology and the impact that technology makes on society and the environment. Graduates desiring teaching licensure for the secondary schools of Indiana must meet the requirements of the technology and engineering education major under the teaching curriculum. The department has an articulation agreement with Ivy Tech Community College that allows for seamless transfer of credits to the Technology and Engineering Education Program.
The Technology Management Program is designed primarily as a degree completion transfer program to articulate with accredited associate of science and associate of applied science programs in industrial and engineering technology related fields. The program focuses on the technology management skills needed to prepare students for career advancement in supervision and management. Graduates of the program are competent in supervision, quality control, production planning, workplace law, project management, and a variety of other skills that prepare them for technology management.
