Accredited programs in athletic training are designed to educate and prepare students to be professionals in the rapidly expanding athletic training and sports medicine professions. The Athletic Training Department offers a bachelor of science degree for students who want careers in athletic training. The bachelor of science degree is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, and prepares students to meet entry-level requirements for becoming a certified athletic trainer.

Degree Offered

The bachelor of science degree is a Commission on Athletic Training Education accredited program. Successful completion of the bachelor of science degree qualifies students to sit for the Board of Certification Examination. The emphasis of this entry-level athletic training curriculum is to provide students with classroom knowledge and clinical experiences that are appropriate for the entry-level preparation of a certified athletic trainer. Course work in the department emphasizes strong theoretical foundations within each of the areas in athletic training, as well as critical thinking and problem solving skills associated with obtaining clinical psychomotor skills. Students also benefit from hands-on clinical education experiences with health care professionals.

Departmental Opportunities

Located in the Student Services Building, the Athletic Training Department shares a modern, fully equipped athletic training facility and clinical instructional laboratory, and supports an active sports injury research center. In addition to the classrooms, activity areas, and a swimming facility, laboratories in human performance, biomechanics, and motor learning, support the athletic training curricula. Further, the University library holdings in athletic training are excellent and include subscriptions to many athletic training, sports medicine, and fitness journals and periodicals.

Faculty and staff are active in advising students in all aspects of their educational preparation. It is advantageous for students to develop a dynamic relationship with their advisor during their progress through the major. All athletic training majors may become a part of the Athletic Trainers’ Student Association on campus. The focus of this organization is to enhance and facilitate athletic student trainers’ needs as they develop and mature through the program.

Graduates of the Athletic Training program are prepared to pursue graduate study in areas such as advanced athletic training, physical therapy, physician’s assistant programs, medical schools, exercise science, biomechanics, and cardiac rehabilitation. Additionally, employment opportunities are widely available in high school, collegiate, professional, corporate industry, individual, clinical, and research environments, or military settings.
