  • PSY 485 - Psychology and Society


    3 credits

    Description
    Students utilize skills and knowledge acquired in basic and liberal studies courses to integrate scientific, social, and individual behavior dimensions of a current social or public policy issue. Students explore factors associated with the development and continuation of the issue, and propose possible solutions using concepts and knowledge from psychology and related fields. Topics will vary.

    Prerequisites
    78 credits and seven of nine required Liberal Studies courses.

    3 credits

    Description
    A capstone course in General Education for recreation and sport management students, this is an interdisciplinary offering focusing on the theories and practices taught in the various recreation and sport management discipline(s). Students will integrate the foundation and functional areas of the various recreation and sport management discipline(s) and synthesis their recreation and sport management education with their liberal studies experience.

    Prerequisites
    minimum of at least 78 credits, including all Basic Studies and seven of the nine Liberal Studies courses. See the General Education section of the Catalog for a complete description of the capstone requirement.

    Description
    This course presents a perspective on the individual and society that emphasizes the importance of the “social” in understanding human life. Students will learn to critically evaluate questions of human nature and the development/structure/processes of human behavior and social systems. Through writing, speaking, reading, and listening, students will enhance their abilities to make informed judgments and reasoned choices about social issues and personal behaviors. Through their development of a “sociological imagination,” students will be better able to understand, participate in, and adapt to social change.

  • SOC 110 - United States and Global Diversity: Sociological Perspectives


    3 credits

    Description
    This course is an introduction to the sociological analysis of diversity in the United States and the world, with particular emphasis on ethnic/racial, gender/sex, and social class issues. Through reading, writing, discussion, and co-curricular activities, students will develop a better understanding of the various facets of a pluralistic American society that is part of an interconnected world. Enrollment is limited in order to enhance participation. The primary goal of the course is to provide a foundation for living in an increasingly diverse American society and interacting in a global environment.
