Language Studies–Teaching Major

Learning Outcomes  

This program is designed for students who wish to obtain licensure to teach in middle school, junior high and high school for French, German, Latin, or Spanish as a second language.

Required Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics courses (7 credits):


 

Language 201 and 202 courses (6 credits):


Choose one set of language 201 and 202 courses:  French, German, Latin or Spanish.

All target-language course work major course work must be completed in a single language.

Required Study Abroad


An applied experience component is required within the 37 credits and must consist of at least six credits of 300/400-level course work in the target language approved by the LLL advisor.  

Target-Language Elective Coursework (24 credits):


Of the 24 credits below:

  • 21 must be at the 300/400 level
  • 3 credits must be at the 200/300/400 level

All target-language elective coursework must be completed in a single language prefix

● 6 credits of course work in culture

● 3 credits of literature

● 3 credits of advanced grammar, and

● 3 credits of oral communication. 

● 9 credits of additional courses in the language

Credits toward these electives may be earned through study abroad courses.


Language Advanced Grammar:


3 credits of advanced grammar

all target-language elective coursework must be completed in a single language prefix

Language Culture:


6 credits in culture 

All target-language course work must be completed in a single language prefix. Students in French and German must complete one culture course at ISU and one culture course abroad. Students in Latin and Spanish choose 6 credits from the list of courses.

Additional Coursework:


In consultation with their advisor, students will choose 9 credits of additional courses in the language. All target-language elective coursework must be completed in a single language prefix.

Other Requirements


Completion of the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) is required in languages in which it is offered. 

A minimum overall grade point average of 2.75 in departmental course work is required.

At least 18 credit hours of the major, not counting any placement credit received, must be taken from the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics at Indiana State University.
