English as a Second Language Minor

(15 credits)

This minor perpares students to teach English as a second language when combined with an approved teacher education major.

Required courses (12 credits):

LING 210 - Introduction to Linguistics 3 Credits
LING 316 - Introduction to Teaching English as a Second Language 3 Credits
LING 420 - Language Acquisition 3 Credits
LING 425 - Pedagogical Grammar in TESL 3 Credits

Choose one from the following (3 credits):

Any upper-division LING course or
LLL 480 - Topics in Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics 1-4 Credits
*Must take LLL 480 for 3 credits

Note:

Students with a completed undergraduate degree seeking to add Teaching English as a Second Language or English as a New Language to an existing license should choose the graduate Teaching English as a Second Language Certificate Program.

At least 9 credit hours of the minor, not counting any placement credit received, must be taken from the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics at Indiana State University.

The English as a Second Language Minor The Minor is not available to students who have declared the Language Studies Teaching Major with a concentration in Teaching English as a Second Language.
