Communication Major

(45 semester hours)

The degree in communication is a combination of required core courses, the selection of one concentration, and 15 hours of electives (a minimum of 3 hours must be chosen from each category of courses in the department: applied courses, context courses, and theory/research/criticism courses); an additional 6 hours may be chosen in consultation with an advisor. A minimum of 9 hours must be at the 300/400 level). Students must complete a minor outside of the Department of Communication.

Core Requirements (15 hours):

COMM 204 - Media and Society 3 hours.
COMM 209 - Introduction to Research in Communication 3 hours.
COMM 290 - Media Writing 3 hours.
COMM 459 - Law and Responsibilities of Broadcast Communications 3 hours.

Choose one from the following:

COMM 492 - Communication Internship 1-6 hours.
COMM 495 - Senior Capstone Experience in Communication 3 hours.

Concentration in Public Relations (15 hours):

COMM 269 - Introduction to Public Relations 3 hours.
COMM 303 - Communication Research Methods 3 hours.
COMM 312 - Introduction to Persuasion Theory 3 hours.
COMM 329 - Public Relations Tactics 3 hours.
COMM 470 - Public Relations Campaign Planning 3 hours.

Concentration in Human Communication (15 hours):

COMM 261 - Small-Group Communication 3 hours.
COMM 303 - Communication Research Methods 3 hours.
COMM 311 - Interpersonal Communication 3 hours.
COMM 455 - Organizational Communication 3 hours.

Choose one from the following:

COMM 304 - Communication Theory 3 hours.
COMM 312 - Introduction to Persuasion Theory 3 hours.

Concentration in Electronic Media (15 hours):

COMM 220 - Audio Production 3 hours.
COMM 305 - Media Research 3 hours.
COMM 330 - Fundamentals of Television Production 3 hours.
COMM 343 - Fundamentals of Visual Imaging 3 hours.
COMM 468 - Media Theory 3 hours.

Concentration in Journalism (15 hours):

COMM 270 - Introduction to Photojournalism 3 hours.
COMM 309 - Reporting I 3 hours.
COMM 327 - Publications Design 3 hours.
COMM 373 - The World Wide Web: Cognition, Research, and Presentation 3 hours.
COMM 409 - Reporting II 3 hours.
