History Major

(39 credits)

Electives (24 credits):


A minimum of 6 credits in each of the following areas, with at least one 400-level course in each area:

  • (Area A) United States;
  • (Area B) Ancient, early modern, and modern European history;
  • (Area C) The Wider World: Mediterranean, Near East, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Note:


At least 15 of the 24 hours must be at the 400-level.

Mediterranean Concentration (12 credits):


A student majoring in history may fulfill a Mediterranean concentration by taking four 300- or 400-level courses in the European and Wider World areas which deal with topics directly related to the Mediterranean area. Completion of an application and course work will result in a student’s being designated as having completed a “History Major with a Mediterranean Concentration.” This will be acknowledged by presentation of a certificate, accompanied by a letter of verification from the Chairperson of the Department of History.

Public and Applied History Concentration (39 credits):


Directed History Electives (18 credits):


  • Six hours in each of the of the department’s three areas of study: United States, Europe, Wider World.
  • At least 12 credits must be at the 400-level, with at least one 400-level course in each area of study.
  • A student may substitute three credits of directed electives with appropriate cognate courses taken in other departments. These cognate courses must be approved by the History Department Chair.
