History Major

Required History (15 credits):

• HIST 101 - Studies in World Civilization to 1500 3 credits
• HIST 102 - Studies in World Civilization since 1500 3 credits
• HIST 201 - The United States to 1877 3 credits
• HIST 202 - The United States since 1865 3 credits
• HIST 300 - History and Historians 3 credits

Electives (24 credits):

A minimum of 6 credits in each of the following areas, with at least one 400-level course in each area:

• (Area A) United States;
• (Area B) Ancient, early modern, and modern European history;
• (Area C) The Wider World: Mediterranean, Near East, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Mediterranean Concentration (12 credits):

A student majoring in history may fulfill a Mediterranean concentration by taking four 300- or 400-level courses in the European and Wider World areas which deal with topics directly related to the Mediterranean area. Completion of an application and course work will result in a student’s being designated as having completed a “History Major with a Mediterranean Concentration.” This will be acknowledged by presentation of a certificate, accompanied by a letter of verification from the Chairperson of the Department of History.
