Accredited programs in applied medicine and rehabilitation educate and prepare students to be professionals in the rapidly expanding health care professions. The Applied Medicine and Rehabilitation Department offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Medicine and a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health. The Applied Medicine degree is intended to prepare students for graduate programs in Athletic Training, Physician Assistant Studies, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and other advanced professional programs. The Public Health degree equips students with interdisciplinary skills to address complex global health challenges and pursue impactful careers. The Department also offers Minors in Massage Therapy, Nutrition, and Public Health. A minor in Advanced Myoskeletal Massage Therapy is for students seeking to complement their work in rehabilitation services and career opportunities. The nutrition minor allows students to gain an understanding about food and nutrition, including where food comes from and how food affects health. The Public Health minor prepares students from different disciplines with basic public health core knowledge in areas of biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, social and behavioral sciences, and health policy and management.
Departmental Opportunities
Students will experience a modern, fully equipped sports medicine and performance center, physical therapy and sports medicine clinic, clinical instructional laboratories, and an active Applied Medicine Research Center. Further, students are continually engaged in interprofessional educational opportunities to prepare them for the health care workforce.
Staff are active in advising students in all aspects of their educational preparation and faculty provide mentoring. It is advantageous for students to develop a dynamic relationship with their academic advisor and faculty mentor during their progress through the major. All undergraduate majors and minors are encouraged to become a part of the pre-professional clubs (Student Occupational Therapy Undergrad, Pre-Physician Assistant Association, Pre-Physical Therapy) on campus. The focus of these organizations is to enhance and facilitate student needs as they develop and mature through the program.
Experiential Learning
Applied Medicine majors engage in experiential learning through clinical experiences, on-campus or in the community. Public Health majors engage in an internship, which provides students with intensive field experience in a private, not-for-profit, or government health settings at the local, state, federal, or international level.
