ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
This department offers two majors and a range of minors in Management and Human Resources. Our majors build a strong, broad foundation in management and human resources, while the minors give students the opportunity to dive deeper and develop specialized expertise in areas that align with their career goals
Management Program
Management is essential to the success of every organization. A degree in Management prepares students with the knowledge and skills needed to lead organizations in a rapidly changing global environment while responding effectively to the needs of society and stakeholders. Students develop competencies in leadership, ethics, strategic management, people management, organizational design, and the role of technology in modern organizations. Students also build practical competencies in artificial intelligence (AI) as it relates to career success, sustainability, social enterprises, and nonprofit management.
The program provides a strong foundation in the core areas of management while allowing students to tailor their education through specialized minors and elective options. Courses emphasize experiential learning, career readiness, and practical application, helping students connect classroom concepts to real-world organizational challenges.
Degrees Offered
A BS in Management is offered through the Scott College of Business. The Management major offers the option of choosing one of two minors:
- Human Capital Management Minor – Integrates HR practices, organizational development strategies, and emerging AI applications to prepare students to lead ethical, data-informed workforce planning, people management, and change initiatives aligned with organizational goals.
- Entrepreneurship Minor – A versatile minor that emphasizes creativity, innovation, and critical thinking while helping students develop an entrepreneurial mindset that creates value across all organizational functions. Students also gain the knowledge and skills needed to launch, manage, and grow new ventures.
Program Opportunities
Providing career-focused, hands-on learning experiences is one of the program’s greatest strengths. In addition to project-based coursework, Management majors may gain valuable professional experience through internships, cooperative practicums, and applied learning opportunities in corporate, nonprofit, industrial, and entrepreneurial settings. Past internship partners have included Kroger, Bemis Company, and Enterprise.
Students are encouraged to become involved in professional and leadership organizations, including Delta Sigma Pi and Alpha Kappa Psi, which offer networking, leadership, and career development opportunities. High-achieving students may also be invited to join Beta Gamma Sigma.
Students also have the option of joining the student-run Entrepreneurship Club, which provides opportunities to develop entrepreneurial skills, collaborate on ideas, and engage with local business leaders and founders. The Women in Business club offers additional opportunities to connect with entrepreneurs and business leaders from the local and regional community.
In addition, all majors in the Scott College of Business may participate in short-term, course-embedded, partially grant-supported international study experiences focused on entrepreneurship and innovation. Past destinations have included Iceland, Finland, Morocco, Thailand, Brazil, Italy, and India, Portugal, Ireland and Croatia giving students a unique global learning experience.
Human Resources Program
A BS in Human Resources is offered through the Scott College of Business. Human Resources (HR) focuses on how organizations attract, develop, support, and retain their people. HR professionals help create fair, productive workplaces by managing hiring, training, performance, compensation, employee relations, and workplace policies. They play a key role in shaping organizational culture, supporting employee well-being, and ensuring that policies and practices align with an organization’s mission and goals. HR is a dynamic field for those who enjoy working with people, solving problems, and improving organizational effectiveness.
Degrees Offered
The B.S. in Human Resources (HR) prepares students to help organizations hire, develop, and support their people to achieve strategic goals. Students gain practical skills and knowledge in recruiting, training and development, talent management, compensation, and employee relations while learning how HR contributes to effective leadership and organizational success. Graduates are ready for entry-level HR and management roles or their further study in business and human resources.
- Talent Development minor brings together HR foundations, learning design, and career development to prepare students to develop talent programs that strengthen workforce capabilities and support evolving career paths in today’s dynamic work environments.
The Human Capital Management minor integrates HR practices, organizational development strategies, and emerging AI applications to prepare students to lead ethical, data‑informed workforce planning and change initiatives aligned with organizational goals
Program Opportunities
Students may join the student chapter of Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), which offers networking, guest speakers, professional development activities, and career preparation opportunities. Participation helps students connect with HR professionals and build readiness for internships and careers in the field.
