The Department of Educational Leadership (EDLR) prepares today’s practicing and promising educators to be tomorrow’s complete administrative professionals.

Facilities and Services

Depending upon the program, practicum, research, and internship experiences are available in many different settings within the University.  Supervised administrative experiences also occur in off-campus locations such as colleges and universities, public schools and districts, and private schools.

Our K-12 administrator programs are designed to prepare future leaders and administrators in the public and private school systems. Program graduates qualify for licensure and professional positions in a variety of public and private school administration settings such as building principals, district superintendents, and directors of curriculum and instruction and exceptional needs. In addition to pursuing advanced degrees, graduate students and practicing professionals may take department courses as part of a licensure, renewal, or personal professional development program. Graduate programs holding national accreditation include the master of education degree in school administration and supervision and the educational specialist degree in school administration, which have been accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). The master’s degree in school administration and supervision leads to license eligibility for building-level administrators in the state of Indiana.  The educational specialist and doctor of philosophy degrees in school administration/education administration lead to license eligibility for district-level administrators in the state of Indiana. Further information about CAEP accreditation may be obtained from Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, 1140 19th St NW, Suite 400 Washington, DC 20036 (202) 223-0077.

HIGHER EDUCATION ADMINISTRATION PROGRAMS

The higher education administration programs are designed to help students develop valuable professional skills that will be used in a college or university setting. Students in the master of science program in student affairs and higher education will learn to provide services and advisement to students and student groups. Students participate regularly in a broad array of practicum opportunities on the Indiana State University campus and at other local and regional institutions with which the SAHE program enjoys strong partnerships. Program graduates are able to secure professional positions in a variety of student affairs fields such as residential life, career services, volunteer programs, admissions, and new student transition programs, among others.

Students in the doctor of philosophy program in higher education leadership will follow a scholar/practitioner philosophy. The program stresses knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for leading institutions of higher education in the twenty-first century. It is designed primarily for professionals currently working in higher education setting who desire a quality educational experience that allows them to continue meeting work and family responsibilities. Graduates of the program are prepared for administrative leadership positions at public or private four-year colleges and universities, community colleges, technical schools, and for-profit postsecondary institutions.
