The Department of Communication at Indiana State University offers a program of study that prepares students to work in today’s constantly changing world.  Our need to create, use, and understand effective communication is more important than ever in human history. There is no question that contemporary communication technologies are changing daily life all over the world. The use of these technologies impacts not only the lives of individuals but communities, societies, and nations. The Communication program at ISU involves students in research, theory, and practice through a course of study that includes common requirements in culture, history, writing, multimedia production, law, and experiential learning. Students also pursue a focused study in Culture, Health, Journalism, Media, or Public Relations. The Department of Communication supports the liberal arts and sciences mission of the College of Arts and Sciences and Indiana State University by participating  in the Foundational Studies Program, the Honors Program, and the Women’s Studies Program.


ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Degrees Offered

The Department of Communication offers a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science degree. Candidates for either degree must complete the University requirement of a minimum of 124 credit hours, including Foundational Studies course work, as well as the requirements for the departmental major, including a minor offered outside the department Candidates for a bachelor of arts degree must also complete two years, or the equivalent, of a foreign language.


Departmental Opportunities

Facilities available for student research and practice include multiple instructional laboratories, a video production studio, and an audio production studio. The Department also houses WISU, a 24-hour per day student run radio operation and Sycamore Video, a student multimedia production program. The Department supports student professional development and community engagement through membership in student chapters of organizations, internships, and opportunities for client-based services and competitions. The college, in consultation with departments, assigns each student a faculty academic advisor. Majors and minors in the Department of Communication are encouraged to maintain good contact with their advisor, and are expected to work with their advisor prior to registration each semester. Students who do so are more likely to meet their goals and achieve academic success.
