ENVI 214 - Introduction to Forensic Anthropology 3 Credits
Description An introduction to Forensic Anthropology and an examination of cross-cultural mortuary practices. Forensic Anthropologists specialize in the skills needed to recover and identify human remains. This applied field of anthropology draws on cultural knowledge of mortuary practices along with taphonomy, botany, entomology, decomposition, archaeology, anatomy, and pathology to identify remains found in crime scenes, archaeological contexts, mass disasters, and genocide or other war crime victims. Diverse cultural contexts affect how death and burial can take place. Students will study that diversity and the cultural and social understandings of death and the accompanied mourning rituals. This class is a gateway to broader fields of forensic specializations which draws on many methods to conduct death scene investigations and recover various forms of trace evidence and information from the deceased.
