Interior Architecture Design Learning Outcomes


Outcome 1: Global View—Students will develop a global view.
1.1 Develop Knowledge of Other Cultures: Students will develop knowledge of other cultures.
1.2 Assessing Implications of Design: Students will assess the implications of conducting the practice of design within a world context.
Outcome 2: Weigh Design Decisions—Students will weigh design decisions within the parameters of ecological, socioeconomic, and cultural contexts.
2.1 Recognize Contemporary Issues: Students will recognize contemporary issues affecting interior design.
2.2 Identify a Variety of Structures: Students will identify a variety of business, organizational, and familial structures.
2.3 Understand Concepts and Theories: Students will understand of the concepts, principles, and theories of sustainability as they pertain to building methods, materials, systems, and occupants.
2.4 Analyze How Design Needs Vary: Students will analyze how design needs may vary for a range of socio-economic stakeholders.
Outcome 3: Apply Knowledge of Behavioral Science in Decisions—Students will apply the knowledge of behavioral science and human factors in design decisions.
3.1 Understand That Social/Behavioral Norms Vary: Students will apprehend that social and behavioral norms may vary from their own and are relevant to making appropriate design decisions.
3.2 Demonstrate Ability to Apply Theories: Students will demonstrate the ability to appropriately apply theories of human behavior.
3.3 Ability to Select/Interpret/Apply Data: Students will cultivate the ability to select, interpret, and apply appropriate anthropometric data.
3.4 Establish the Ability to Apply Design Concepts: Students will establish the ability to appropriately apply universal design concepts.

7.5 Produce Competent Contract Drawings: Students will produce competent contract documents including coordinated drawings, schedules, and specifications appropriate to project size and scope, and sufficiently extensive to show how design solutions and interior construction are related.

Outcome 14: Select and Specify Materials in Interior Spaces—Students will select and specify furniture, fixtures, equipment and finish materials in interior spaces.
14.1 Exposure to a Broad Range of Materials: Students will have exposure to a broad range of materials and products.
14.2 Mindfulness of Fabrication/Installation Methods: Students will have mindfulness of typical fabrication and installation methods for specified materials and products.
14.3 Awareness of Specified Materials & Maintenance: Students will have awareness of specified materials and product maintenance requirements.
14.4 Apply Appropriate Materials and Products: Students will select and apply appropriate materials and products on the basis of their properties and performance criteria, including ergonomics, environmental attributes, and life cycle cost.
14.5 Layout and Specify Equipment and Supplies: Students will layout and specify furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
Outcome 15: Use Principles to Enhance Aspects for Occupants—Students will use the principles of lighting, acoustics, thermal comfort, and indoor air quality to enhance the health, safety, welfare, and performance of building occupants.

15.2 Competently Select and Apply Luminaires: Students will competently select and apply luminaires and light sources.
15.3 Competently Select Acoustical Design: Students will competently select acoustical design and can appropriate strategies for acoustical control.
15.4 Examine Thermal Design& Thermal Systems Impact: Students will examine thermal design and how thermal systems impact interior design solutions as well as indoor air quality.
15.5 Analyze Selection and Application of Products: Students will analyze the selection and application of products and systems that impact indoor air quality.

16.1 Read & Interpret Construction Drawings & Docs: Students will read and interpret construction drawings and documents.
16.2 Understand What Impacts Design Solutions #1: Students will understand that design solutions are affected and are impacted by structural systems and methods.
16.3 Understand What Impacts Design Solutions #2: Students will recognize that design solutions are affected and are impacted by non-structural systems including ceilings, flooring, and interior walls.
16.4 Identify What Impacts Design Solutions #3: Students will identify that design solutions are affected and are impacted by distribution systems including power, mechanical, HVAC, data/voice telecommunications, and plumbing, energy, security, and building controls systems.
16.5 Understand What Impacts Design Solutions #4: Students will realize that design solutions are affected and are impacted by the interface of furniture with distribution and construction systems as well as vertical circulation systems.
Outcome 17: Understand Laws, Codes, Standards and Guidelines—Students will understand and apply laws, codes, standards, and guidelines that impact the design of interior spaces.
17.1 Identify Sustainability Guidelines: Students will identify sustainability guidelines and industry-specific regulations.
17.2 Apply Appropriate Legislation Codes: Students will apply appropriate federal, state/provincial, and local codes.

17.4 Demonstrate Understanding of Fire Safety Laws: Students will demonstrate understanding of laws, codes, standards, and guidelines that impact fire and life safety.
