  • INS 199 - Honors Summer Seminar for High School Students


    2 credits

    Description
    A purpose of this course is to acquaint the high school student with the risk management discipline, insurance and its use in treating loss exposures, and the structure of insurance contracts (property, liability, life, and health). Another purpose of this course is to examine public policy issues relating to risk management and insurance (e.g., should insurers be allowed to discriminate between males and females for risk classification purposes, what legislative health insurance reform measures should be enacted, how can the price/availability problem with respect to homeowners insurance in inner-city neighborhoods and coastal communities be solved). Still another purpose of this course is to expose the student to professional career opportunities in the insurance field.

  • INS 436 - Financial Planning


    3 credits

    Description
    This capstone course includes the development and implementation of a comprehensive financial plan and the role of financial planning in the financial services industry. While the course focuses on the plan for the individual, selected aspects of sole proprietorships, partnerships, and S corporations are also examined. A case approach is utilized emphasizing the roles of investments, taxes, insurance, risk management, retirement planning, and estate planning.

    Prerequisites
    INS 341 and junior standing.

  • LLL 409 - Internship in Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics


    1-4 credits

    Description
    Practicum designed to provide direct, supervised experiences for undergraduate students in the area of languages, literatures, and linguistics. Experiences are tailored to the needs of the student. The area in which the internship is taken will be designated on the student’s transcript, for example, Internship: Spanish translation.

    Prerequisites
    successful completion of at least 202-level course work or higher in a language or at least Linguistics 200 or 210 (or higher).

    Note
    May be repeated for a total of no more than 4 credit hours.

    Description
    Whole numbers and the language of algebra; algebraic expressions involving whole numbers, fractions; decimals; concepts and formulas from geometry; operations on signed numbers; using signed numbers; solving equations; ratio, proportion, and percent; interpreting data from statistics and graphs; analyzing word problems.

    Prerequisites
    Appropriate placement examination (MAPLE T.A.) score.

    Note
    Does not count as credit toward graduation. Grades earned are S or U only and not counted in the student’s grade point average.

    Description
    Interpret formulas, graphs, and tables to draw inferences from them. Represent mathematical information symbolically, visually, numerically, and verbally. Use arithmetic, algebraic, geometric, statistical, and financial computational methods to solve problems. Determine reasonableness of answers and select optimal results. Recognize mathematical and statistical limits of methods.

    Prerequisites
    Appropriate placement examination (MAPLE T.A.) score or MATH 011.

    Description
    Polynomial equations, systems of linear equations, translations, reflections, symmetry, functions, graphs, lines and conic sections, mathematical induction, and trigonometric functions.

    Prerequisites
    appropriate placement examination (MAPLE T.A.) score or MATH 111. Students without an appropriate trigonometry background are advised to take MATH 112.

    Does not count toward the mathematics major or minor.
